Texas Toast Sloppy Joes
Ingredients:
For the Sloppy Joe Filling:
1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
1 small onion (diced)
1 bell pepper (diced, optional)
2 cloves garlic (minced)
1 cup ketchup
2 tbsp tomato paste
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp mustard
1 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup water or beef broth (to adjust consistency)
For the Texas Toast:
4 slices Texas toast (thick-cut, pre-buttered or homemade)
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
Chopped parsley (for garnish, optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Sloppy Joe Filling:
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
Add the diced onion, bell pepper (if using), and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Add water or beef broth to reach your desired consistency (thicker or more saucy).
Simmer the mixture over low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
2. Prepare the Texas Toast:
If you”re using store-bought Texas toast, follow the package instructions to toast it in the oven. Alternatively, you can make your own by buttering thick slices of bread, sprinkling with garlic powder, and toasting them on both sides in a skillet until golden brown and crispy.
Keep the toast warm while you prepare the sloppy joe filling.
3. Assemble the Sandwiches:
Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture generously onto the toasted Texas toast slices.
Top with the second slice of Texas toast and serve immediately.
4. Serve:
Serve your Texas Toast Sloppy Joes with chips, fries, or a side salad. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
These Texas Toast Sloppy Joes are a delicious twist on the classic sloppy joe, served on thick, buttery toast for extra crunch and flavor. Perfect for a quick dinner or a fun family meal! ππ
