STEAK FRITES
- Steak Frites is a classic French dish consisting of a perfectly cooked steak served with crispy, golden French fries. It’s simple yet indulgent and can be made at home with just a few ingredients.
INGREDIENTS
For the Steak:
2 ribeye steaks (or your preferred cut, about 1 inch thick)
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
2 cloves garlic, smashed
2 sprigs fresh thyme (optional)
For the Fries:
4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut into thin fries
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or more, for frying)
Salt, to taste
For the Sauce (optional):
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Prepare the Fries:
Heat oil in a deep pan or a deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
While the oil heats, cut the peeled potatoes into thin fries. Rinse them in cold water to remove excess starch, then pat dry with a paper towel.
Carefully lower the fries into the hot oil, working in batches if necessary, and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
Remove the fries from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Season with salt immediately.
2. Cook the Steaks:
Season the steaks generously with salt and pepper on both sides.
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil or butter.
Add the steaks to the pan, along with the smashed garlic and thyme. Sear for 4-5 minutes per side, depending on your desired doneness (use a meat thermometer for precision: 125°F for rare, 135°F for medium-rare, 145°F for medium).
Once cooked to your preference, remove the steaks from the pan and let them rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
3. Make the Garlic Butter Sauce (optional):
In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
Stir in the chopped parsley and drizzle the sauce over the cooked steaks before serving.
4. Serve:
Plate the steak next to a generous portion of crispy fries.
Optionally, drizzle the garlic butter sauce over the steak and fries for added flavor.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve with a side of fresh greens or a simple salad to balance the richness of the steak and fries.
Pair with a glass of red wine, like a Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, for the perfect French bistro experience.
