Homemade Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:

• 1 lb ground beef (substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option)
• 1 small onion, finely chopped
• 1/2 green bell pepper, finely chopped
• 1/2 red bell pepper, finely chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 tbsp garlic paste)
• 1/4 cup tomato paste
• 1/2 cup ketchup
• 1-2 tbsp brown sugar
• 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
• 1 tsp mustard (Dijon or yellow)
• 1/2 tsp chili powder (adjust to taste)
• 1 tsp Better Than Bouillon beef base
• AP seasoning, to taste
• Hamburger buns, for serving
• Fried onions and pickles (optional toppings)

Instructions:

1. Prepare Ingredients
• Finely chop the onion and bell peppers, and mince the garlic (or use garlic paste).
2. Cook the Ground Beef
• In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned (about 5-7 minutes), breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Drain any excess fat if needed.
3. Add the Vegetables
• Add the chopped onion, bell peppers, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
4. Prepare the Sauce
• Stir in the tomato paste, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and chili powder. Add the beef base and AP seasoning to taste, stirring until well combined. Add a splash of water if needed for desired consistency.
5. Simmer
• Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens.
6. Serve
• Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto hamburger buns and top with fried onions and pickles, if desired.
