Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic

This dish combines smoky bacon, tender cabbage, and aromatic garlic and onions to create a comforting and flavorful side. Perfect for chilly evenings or any meal, the crispy bacon crumbles add a satisfying crunch, and the cabbage absorbs all the savory goodness. For added color and sweetness, carrots can be incorporated into the recipe. It’s an easy-to-make and crowd-pleasing dish that complements a variety of main courses.

6 slices bacon
1 large onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 large head cabbage, cored and sliced
1 tablespoon salt, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
⅛ teaspoon paprika
Carrots (optional)

Directions:
1. Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove and set aside on paper towels to drain, then chop into crumbles.
2. In the same skillet, sauté the garlic and onion in the bacon grease for about 5 minutes, until tender.
3. Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet and cook for 10 minutes, or until softened.
4. Return the bacon crumbles to the skillet. If the cabbage is dry, add ⅓ cup of water. Season with salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Stir well.
5. Reduce heat and let simmer for a few more minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated.
6. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Optionally, add chopped carrots for color and sweetness.
