Easy French Bread Recipe

Ingredients:
– 4 cups all-purpose flour
– 2 tablespoons sugar
– 1 tablespoon salt
– 1 packet active dry yeast (around 2 1/4 teaspoons)
– 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
– 2 tablespoons olive oil (optional, for added flavor)

Instructions:
1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Add sugar and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Once the yeast mixture is ready, pour it into the flour mixture along with olive oil (if using).

3. Mix until a dough forms. You can use a wooden spoon or your hands to combine.

4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.

5. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

6. After rising, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Shape it into a loaf by rolling it tightly and tucking the ends underneath.

7. Place the shaped loaf onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a greased baking dish.

8. Cover the loaf with a towel and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.

9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

10. Once the dough has risen, make a few shallow slashes on top with a sharp knife. This will help the bread expand in the oven.

11. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

12. Let it cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy your homemade French bread!
